James B. (“J.B.”) Milliken

University of Nebraska ’79

As the current President of the four-campus Nebraska system, brother Milliken’s leadership skills will help the Nebraska students Go far.



A member of the Nebraska Alpha Chapter, Milliken was also involved with the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in English, he received financial assistance as an Educational Foundation scholarship winner.
He attended New York University School of Law as a Root-Tilden Scholar, graduating in 1983. Before joining the University of Nebraska in 1988, Milliken practiced law in New York City at the firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. He has also worked in Washington as Legislative Assistant to Congresswoman Virginia Smith.

He previously served as senior vice president for University Affairs for the 16-campus University of North Carolina. Prior to joining UNC, Milliken was Vice President for External Affairs and Corporation Secretary for the University of Nebraska system. He also held a courtesy appointment as Professor of Educational Administration at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he taught graduate seminars in higher education administration.

Milliken is a member of the Business Higher Education Forum, the Council on Competitiveness, and the board of directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. He serves on the board of directors of the Nebraska State Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and Nebraska Diplomats. He is Vice Chairman of Bio Nebraska, and a member of the U.S. Strategic Command Consultation Committee. He and his wife Nana Smith live with their three children in Lincoln.
